John Key's new threshold for compassion in a recession

A blog entry from Tumeke! by Bomber Bradbury
ACC denied funeral claim
Distraught about losing their son, a Palmerston North couple have hit out at the lack of help available to the mentally ill or to families of people who commit suicide.

ACC’s decision to deny any claims by families for suicide funeral costs as the National Party don’t consider suicide an accident is just another example of how John Key can find money for tax cuts that benefit the rich while denying funding for people in need.
This despicable, petty, nasty little cost cutting measure is simply another example of John Key’s new threshold of compassion during a recession, forget media rules covering suicides John, how about some help to cover funeral costs for the families impacted by the highest suicide rates in the OECD? Just like National’s decision to cut ACC funded counseling to rape victims which despite a damning report on the bullshit ‘Massey Guidelines’ policy is still continuing to deny women counseling services for rape with no monitoring system put in place despite promises by Nick Smith and ACC to do it.
And why haven’t any of you heard about denying the families of suicide victims any funeral costs and denying people counseling for rape in the TV news? Because apparently those issues aren’t as interesting as the death of a psychic octopus.
Denying women counselling for rape and suicide funeral costs, how's that 'change' feeling folks?

  1. Yes, I think it sums up what we are all thinking. Where is the 'monitoring group' Nick Smith said was being set up and what of the recommendations from the review panel that he said were going to be implemented?? What a joke!!

  2. So what happens if someone commits suicide as part of their mental health issues arising from an accepted Sensitive Claim?

I agree, the review panel recommendations seem to have gone nowhere. It was looking promising for a moment there, but no.

  3. I need some ideas! We have fought and protested and screamed and jumped up and down for over a year and all we have to show for it is 14 recommendations.

I have communicated with everyone I can think of to try and get something more concrete out of Smith and ACC but have received little response. In fact, the only response I had was from the fabulous Bomber Bradbury, who very kindly emailed back to get the full story and who wrote the post above.

There have been no press releases from the professional organisations since the recommendations first came out. There have been no questions in the House. There have been no media articles calling for ACC and Smith to be held accountable. The report has been shelved. Is this the result we fought for? Why are none of the people with influence doing anything now?

  4. I am thinbking that ACC and the sensitive claims unit are being very devious and underhanded as I am VERY reliably informed that Dr John Collier - Psychiatrist of Hamilton is now in the process of closing down his private practice.

    AND WHY???

Dr John Collier is going to become a full time Employee of ACC/SCU as the new "ACC CONSULTANT". Now I am not sure if he is also or is on the monitoring group or not - but whatever it is, ACC are being very sneaky (nothing new here though). Why? Because ACC/SCU have been using Dr Collier - in my honest opinion as their 'hatchet man' over the last few months. Dr Collier has been travelling around NZ undertaking assessments for sensitive claimants.

I also know this becuase at one point in time this year, aroundApril Dr Jansen et al offered me an appointment for an assessment with Dr Collier - in WELLINGTON - in June. Dr Collier is based in Hamilton and I could have attended to see him in Hamilton (only a couple of hours away for me). But no, they wanted me to see him in Wellington and they were going fly me down at huge costs obviously.

Also, I am aware of significant professiona 'disquiet' in professional circles in the Waikato District concerning Dr Colliers reports and assessments.

Now, has ACC announced Dr Collier's appointment as their "ACC Consultant" No of course not.

What does that tell you?? Just more of the same and that nothing much has really changed with the sensitive claims unit.

  5. Also in October, I saw this but know of nothing since then except for Dr John Collier's appointment as the ACC/SCU ACC Consultant.

"ACC is now meeting with the Sensitive Claims Advisory Group (SCAG) on a monthly basis to construct something workable to replace the disastrous Pathways ( bearing in
mind that our meetings were decreased to twice a year simultaneously to the Pathways being announced)".

Much more than this - I also have no idea, but I know there is a COG's meeting tomorrow in Wellington. Have a look on ACC's web site and someone should urgently consider getting hold of one of these members (community reps) and have them ask some questions of ACC. Contact details are provided through COG's minutes

Also, how about someone Emailing or ringing Mike Tulley - ACC National Manager Rehabilitation Services. He is very much up with the play concerning SCU and he is a very big fan of Dr Jansen's as well and will defend him to the hilt. Mike Tulley can be contacted on - 049187232 or 0275533913.

If we want some answers - go to this man. I am thinking that Mike Tulley may have taken over the reign from Denise Cosgrove???

  7. Can anyone corroborate the suggestion that Dr Collier is working full-time as an ACC "Consultant". Does anyone have any suggestion of where this information would be available, publicly.

  8. Dr John Collier is still operating as a psychiatrist and has his rooms at 100 Clarance Street Hamilton. I know this as I was sent to him by ACC within the last 6 months for an assessment that was so distorted by Dr Collier it is now before the review board. I have Dr Colliers email address if anyone wants it.

  11. Dr John Collier is a fair and compassionate man. Those of you posting otherwise are probably Borderlines and therefore likely to attack anyone who negates anything you say. Many comments on this post are defamatory.

  12. Um, no, they're not. Do you even know what defamation is?? Everyone's entitled to their opinion without being personally attacked. Thank you for your view but we don't like trolls around here.
